FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sigma Pi Fraternity from California State University at Dominguez Hills participated in a Wilmington Clean Up on August 24, 2002. They picked up trash, swept up glass and painted over graffiti. The college students thought that cleaning up the community was a great way to spend their weekend. The group from Dominguez hills was in charge of cleaning up two city blocks. Chapter President, Adrian Rodriguez supported the efforts of Luis Narez, philanthropy chair, who made phone calls and worked hard to get other students involved. Rodriguez stated, “We made a real difference in Wilmington. When people ask me about my sunburn, I am proud to tell them what I did with my weekend. Giving back to the community is what our Fraternity believes in. The Sigma Pi Alumni gave me a pat on the back.” Mr. Narez was glad his Fraternity got involved. “It’s great to see everyone get involved. I grew up in Wilmington, and I always thought it was a nice place. But when people see all the graffiti and trash, they think it’s a dangerous place. The people here are great. I’m glad that my Fraternity Brothers have came down to help out." Mr. Rodriguez and the other brothers from Sigma Pi are planning more philanthropic activities this Semester including blood drives, canned food drives, and raising money for the charity. Steve Silbiger, CSUDH Alumni Association President, congratulated Adrian Rodriguez and the active chapter of Sigma Pi. "It's great that to see the chapter membership helping out the community. At some other universities, community service is a graduation requirement. I am glad to see you guys took the lead in making a difference in the community. Your efforts are a great reflection on the quality students attending C.S.U. Dominguez Hills. This is a true example of TORO spirit in action."
CARSON, CALIFORNIA Walter Lopez has been hired by the American Red Cross as the Director of Donor Recruitment. He will co-ordinate blood drives for the Red Cross in the South Bay and South Los Angeles Area. His responsibilities include everything communications with large companies, schools, and community organizations to setting up the Blood Mobile. Mr. Lopez credits his California State University Dominguez Hills education and his experience with Sigma Pi Fraternity for his success. “I learned about communication and organization in classes at the University. The Fraternity helped me put what I learned in to action. I regularly had to conduct meetings, use my people skills, and speak in front of large groups. College taught me what I needed to know, and Sigma Pi helped me develop my leadership skills.” In addition to owning a graphic design business, Lopez is currently working with developmentally disabled children in a Preschool Mix Class for Los Angeles Unified School District’s. The children range in age from three to five years old. “It was hard for me to make the decision to work for the Red Cross. I will really miss the kids. But after what happened on September 11th, I started to wonder what I could do to help out. It’s really important that we have an adequate blood supply—especially with the possible US military action in the Middle East. “Students at my Alma Mater are eager to help out. The guys at my fraternity are already organizing a blood drive at the school.” If you are interested in giving blood, or belong to an organization that would like to hold a blood drive, please feel free to contact Walter at (310) 420-2531. Members of Sigma Pi's Eta Iota Chapter at California State University Dominguez Hills assisted in their School's Day at Dominguez program. Fraternity Brothers gave tours of the campus to high school students from the surrounding community. They also answered questions about college life and academic requirements. The Day at Dominguez program was conducted by the University to show potential students what college is all about. Having student involvement is important because teenagers can relate more to university students than administrators. High school students are more likely to ask questions to someone closer to their own age. Also, university students are perceived as being able to tell it like it is. Generally, the Day at Dominguez targets young people who might not otherwise consider attending a University. ### For Immediate Release Eta Iota Fields a Great Team and Raises Money for Charity$2,000 Raised in Charity Softball Event
